BRAC Expands Microcredit

The Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) will disburse 10. 5 billion taka (about 228 million U. S. dollars under its micro-credit program for income generating activities for the landless poor, a BRAC press release available here said.
As the largest non-government organization in Bangladesh, the BRAC disbursed 6.88 billion taka (about 150 million dollars) in 1997 under the micro-credit program.  The cumulated loans disbursed by the BRAC since it launched the micro-credit program in 1996 has amounted to 22.77 billion taka (about 495 million dollars) with a 98 percent repayment rate, according to the release. Meanwhile, the savings with the poor rural women borrowers have gone up to 2 billion taka (about 4.3 5 million dollars).
At present, the BRAC has about 2 million borrowers, most of whom are from landless poor households, the release said.
