Priya
Nanda's paper The Impact of Women's Participation in Credit
Programs on the Demand for Quality Health Care in Rural Bangladesh
(Johns Hopkin's School of Hygiene and Public Health, Baltimore,
MD) examines empirically, the impact of women's participation
in credit programs (including Grameen Bank, BRAC and BRDB)
on their own demand for quality health care. This research
uses data from a household survey conducted by the World Bank
in collaboration with the Bangladesh Institute of Development
Studies (BIDS) in 87 villages of 29 thanas in rural Bangladesh,
during 1991-92. The study finds that women's access and control
over resources can potentially alleviate their health problems
and enhance their decision making within the household. The
study also suggests that participation enhanced other aspects
of a woman's power such as access to information and possibly,
mobility.

Society
for Helping Awakening the Rural Poor through Education (SHARE),
was established in July 1993 as a Grameen Bank replication
project in Andhra Pradesh, India. In September 2001,
SHARE enrolled their 100,000th member. SHARE is the first
international Grameen replication program to achieve this
number. Between March 2000 and September 2001, SHARE effectively
doubled its membership. Udaia Kumar, the chief executive of
SHARE, believes that registering SHARE as a Non Banking Finance
Corporation in April 1999 was a key factor in making this
expansion possible in such a short period. Banks, he observes,
are more willing to lend to a regulated financial company.
SHARE
aims to provide rural women with the initial capital required
to utilize their survival skills to gain an economic base
and reduce dependency. SHARE works in Guntur, Kurnool,
Ranga Reddy and Prakasham districts of Andhra
Pradesh.the end of November 2001, SHARE had disbursed US$
25,360,451 to 112,812 borrowers with a consistent repayment
rate of 100%.Grameen Trust began its financial and technical
support to SHARE in 1994, from its very inception.
