45th International Dialogue

The 45th International Dialogue, jointly organized by Grameen Trust and Grameen Bank, was held in Dhaka between March 14-24, 2003. There were participants from five different countries: Australia, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and the U. S. A.

After a brief introduction to "Grameen Bank", the participants spent most of their time observing Grameen Bank operation in the field. They stayed in different branches where they observed first hand the essential features of Grameencredit such as centre meetings, loan supervision, group formation, accounting and management information systems. Participants were encouraged to conduct their own inquires and find out the answers. Participants returned to the head office, where they engaged in two days of intensive discussion regarding their field experience. The participants also visited an urban replication of Grameen, thus observing the transferability of micro-finance across different social and geographical contexts.

As the final step in the dialogue process, participants prepared action plans, outlining what would be their follow up activities after their return to their own countries. These included concrete plans for setting up microcredit pilot programs, restructuring existing microfinance as well as more general action plans.
