Nuclear threats, microcredit and the peaceful search for freedom are the central themes of the 2006 Four Freedoms Awards.

The Four Freedoms, outlined by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt around 65 years ago, continue to be essential values for humanity. Countless people strive to realise these universal freedoms worldwide. The Four Freedoms Awards are presented to individuals or organisations that have been active on an international level for the protection or realisation of human freedom.


The annual presentation of the Four Freedoms Awards is both a sign that the struggle for freedom is far from over, and a recognition of the power of social commitment and individual perseverence to achieve it.

This year the Four Freedoms Awards were presented in the Netherlands in May to the following people:

Professor Muhammed Yunus, the founder of Grameen Bank was recognized as the founding father of microcredit, a successful form of development aid that Princess Maxima has taken a great interest in. The other winners were Dr. Mohamed El Baradei, chairperson of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Carlos Fuentes for Freedom of Speech and Expression, and the Taize Community of France for Freedom of Worship
